The Acknowledged Standard GBIC Transceiver

GBIC Transceiver( gigabit interface converter), one of the many types of transceivers, is a media conversion device between a gigabit Ethernet network and a separate fiber optic based network. Via the GBIC transceiver, Gigabit network equipment can directly connect to copper wires, single mode fiber ports or multimode fiber ports.

Main Features
Generally GBIC fiber optic end the interface is SC type, the laser unit in GBIC module can be 850nm VCSEL, 1310nm FP, 1310nm DFB, and 1550nm DFB. GBIC module can be changed from one type of external interface to another simply by plugging in a GBIC having the alternative external interface. The GBIC transceivers are suitable for interconnections in the Gigabit Ethernet hubs and switches environment. The design of these converters is also practical for other high performance, for example, point-to-point communication applications that involve interconnecting components and
exchanging data between Ethernet and fiber optic networks.

Changing from one type to another is simple because a GBIC transceiver can be removed and installed without turning off the power. Generalized enclosures may be compatible with various transceiver types. It is not complicated to operate, and the digital data transmitter and receiver functions at high speeds. Some models can provide a bi-directional data connection of up to 1.25 gigabits/second, so there is great compatibility with high-speed networks. Compatibility with common power supplies, such as +3.3 and +5.5 volt ratings, extends this compatibility even more.

Other important features of a GBIC transceiver which add to energy efficiency initiatives are that the unit offers low power dissipation and emits little electromagnetic interference. Each device can install and function without disrupting anything, but this plug and play capability can be offset by the need to disconnect patch cords before it is installed or taken out. Power surges and data discrepancies can occur, and it’s always wise to take precautions to avoid this as much as possible, especially in high-density networks.

Industrial Standard
GBIC has its multi sources agreement as the industrial standard, this help manufacturers save cost to develop their each own standard and solve the problem of compatibility. All of the different modules by various manufactures are developed based on industrial standard. This means that they can all be compatible with the same network and with each other to meet data communications requirements. By offering a standard, hot swappable electrical interface, one gigabit port can support a wide range of physical media, from copper to long-wavesingle-mode optical fiber, at lengths of hundreds of kilometers.

GBIC classification is based on its working wavelength, data transmitting rate, working power, and the working distance. The device is characterized by features, such as the wavelengths it can handle, how fast and efficiently it transmits data, the power it needs to operate, and what distance it can transmit data over. These are the main factors to consider when buying a GBIC transceiver to be sure it meets network performance requirements.

Ingellen supplies various kinds of GBIC fiber optic transceivers products, including single mode GBIC, multimode GBIC and copper GBIC with compatibale brands like Cisco, HP and so on. We haveCWDM GBICtransceivers that are with different operation wavelength. EachGBIC Transceiver Moduleis compliant to industrial standard and they are compatible to use with fiber optical equipments from other major companies like Cisco, Juniper, etc.

The Operatation Of A Fiber Optic Transceiver

A fiberoptical transceiveris a device used to send and receive optical information. By using an optical transceiver, network spend less space and steer clear of the necessity of getting a transmitter and receiver in the network. Able to transmitting information further and faster than older models, the more recent transceivers are utilized and appearance, creating more compact, smaller sized modules than ever before.

How Do Fiber Optic Transceivers Work
A fiber optic transceiver is a accessory acclimated to forward and accept optical information. There are a number of different components on one of these devices, including a light source and an electrical component. The transceiver has two ends, one that an optical cable plugs into and accession for abutting an electrical device. Fiber optic transceivers combine a fiber optic transmitter and a fiber optic receiver in a single module. They are arranged in parallel so that they can operate independently of each other. Both the receiver and the transmitter have their own circuitry and can handle transmissions in both directions.

In fiber optic data links, the transmitter converts an electrical signal into an optical signal, which is coupled with a connector and transmitted through a fiber optic cable. The light from the end of the cable is coupled to a receiver, where a detector converts the light back into an electrical signal. Either a light emitting diode (LED) or a laser diode is used as the light source.

How to Select Fiber Optic Transceivers
Fiber optic transceivers are designed for use with single mode or multi-mode cable. There are a number of different types of fiber optic transceivers available. They differ in the types of connections as well as in the quality of data transmission. Speed of transmission may also change from device to device. So it is necessary to choose the right fiber modules for your network.

Single-mode fibers (SMF) transmit infrared (IR) laser light at wavelength from 1,300 to 1,550 nm. They have small cores and are used withlaser sources for high speed, long distance links.
Multimode fibers have larger cores and are used mainly with LED sources for lower speed, shorter distance links. The typical transmission speeds and distance limits are 100 Mbit/s for up to 2km, 1Gbit/s to 220-550m, and 10Gbit/s to 300m.
Products that can be used with both types of optical fiber are also available.

Ingellen provides not only the classical 1x9 footprint duplex package but also advanced packages such as SFP (small form-factor pluggable) transceiver module(like1000Base-T copper SFP), GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter) fiber transceiver, BIDI (single fiber bi-directional) fiber optic transceiver, BIDI-SFP transceiver module, and BIDI-GBIC transceiver, SFP+ transceiver module, XFP optical transceiver, Xenpak optical transceiver, X2 transceiver module. In addition, optical transceivers with Digital Diagnostic Function are also available. Allfiber transceiversare RoHS compliant and could be 100% compatible with branding equipment, such as Cisco, Extreme, Juniper, HP, H3C, Linksys, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Foundry, Nortel, Force10 etc.

The Types
SFP Transceivers have a wide range of detachable interfaces to multimode/single-mode fiber optics, which allows users to select the appropriate transceiver according to the required optical range for the network. SFP has transmission rate ranging from 100Mbps to 4Gbps and it can work at distances ranging between 500 meters to hundreds of kilometers. Optical SFP modules are commonly available in several different categories, including single mode SFP, multimode SFP and copper SFP, which are with various working wavelength and functions. Each type comes with different configurations of transmitter and receiver.

Multi-mode fiber
SX - 850 nm, for a maximum of 550 m at 1.25 Gbit/s (Gigabit Ethernet) or 150m at 4.25 Gbit/s (Fibre Channel).
Single-mode fiber
LX - 1310 nm, for distances up to 10 km;
BX - 1490 nm/1310 nm, Single Fiber Bi-Directional Gigabit SFP Transceivers, paired as BS-U and BS-D for Uplink and Downlink respectively, also for distances up to 10 km. Variations of bidirectional SFPs are also manufactured which use 1550 nm in one direction;
1550 nm 40 km (XD), 80 km (ZX), 120 km (EX or EZX);
CWDM andDWDM SFPtransceivers at various wavelengths achieving various maximum distances.
Copper fiber
1000BASE-T - these modules incorporate significant interface circuitry and can only be used for Gigabit Ethernet, as that is the interface they implement. They are not compatible with (or rather:do not have equivalents for) Fibre channel or SONET.

Suitable Applications:
Switches/bridges/routers/servers;
SONET/SDH Network;
Gigabit Ethernet;
1x/2x Fiber Channel;
Point-to-point networking;
Metro Access Rings;
Fiber-to-the-desktop (FTTD);
High-speed computer links;
LAN, SAN (local, storage area networks).

The Advantages
SFP, also called a mini GigaBit Interface Converter (GBIC), is an upgraded version of GBIC module. Since SFP is only half the size of the GBIC, making it saved more space. Any future changes can be easily incorporated into the SFP module, it is easier to change and easier for maintenance compared with traditional modules. Users can replace a single SFP module during the process instead of replace the whole board with many modules on it.

SFP optic transceiver is also available with copper cable interfaces, which allows a host device designed primarily for optical fiber communications to communicate over shielded or unshielded twisted pair networking cables. Usually such copper cable interfaces are used when the information to be transmitted needs to cover only shorter distances where use of copper cable is more economical than optic fiber cables.

Modern optical SFP transceivers support digital diagnostics monitoring (DDM) functions, also known as digital optical monitoring (DOM). This feature gives users the ability to monitor the real-time parameters of SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser-bias current and transceiver supply voltage. SFP transceivers are housed in a metal enclosure and their power dissipation is low. They operate over a wide temperature range and support a large number of different types of cable. An improved version of SFPoptical transceiverstandard called SFP+ can support transmissionrates up to 10Gbps.

OC-3/STM-1 SFP Optic Modules Overview

SFP(Small Form-Factor Pluggable Interface Converter) optic modules, are small form factor pluggable module for multi-mode fiber Fast Ethernet, plug into a variety of SFP-based POS, TDM and ATM interfaces on router products. This line of SFP optics supports the following three data rates at various reaches:OC-3/STM-1SFP (155 Mbps), OC-12/STM-4 SFP (622 Mbps), and OC-48/STM-16 SFP (2,488 Gbps).

Large economies of scale can be achieved by substituting multiple single T1/E1 trunks with a single fiber connection running at 155 Mbps, which OC-3/STM-1 does. OC-3 STM-1 is a network line with transmission speeds of up to 155.52 Mbit/s (payload: 148.608 Mbit/s; overhead: 6.912 Mbit/s, including path overhead) using fiber optics. Depending on the system OC-3 is also known as STS-3 (electrical level) and STM-1 (SDH). OC-3/STM-1 is a commonly used universal interface in the telecom community. A STM-1 or OC-3 interface will reduce overall expenses and control costs by combining data and voice applications over one circuit. These modules are also used for Fast Ethernet application. Depending on the market, the benefits can be seen as soon as you subscribe to more than 20 T1 or E1 circuits simultaneously. Cisco X2-10GB-SR
TheX2-10GB-SRis a Class 1 laser product, which is designed for 300m Transmission with a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). X2-10GB-SR, replacement for Cisco 10GBase-SR SC 300M, is a hot pluggable in the Z-direction module that is usable in typical router line card applications, Storage, IP network and LAN and compliant to X2 MSA. It fully complies with the multi-sourcing agreement (MSA) which enables it to work in all MSA compliant platforms. 10GBase-SR is the original multimode optics specification, and is still by far the most commonly used. As it uses a single, low cost solid state laser assembly, it is also the least expensive of the optical modules available for a 10GbE platform.

The Cisco 10GBASE-SR Module supports a link length of 26m on standard FDDI grade MMF. Using 2000 MHz*km MMF (OM3), up to 300m link lengths are possible. Using 4700 MHz*km MMF (OM4), up to 400m link lengths are possible. X2-10GB-SR is high performance, cost effective module supporting 300M transmission distance, also, the X2-10GB-SR is a fully integrated 10.3Gbit/s optical transceiver module that consists of a 10.3Gbit/s optical transmitter and receiver, XAUI interface, Mux and Demux with clock and data recovery(CDR). This X2-10GB-SR version of X2 transceiver line uses an 850nm Vcsel Laser Diode to achieve 300m over 50/125 multi-mode fiber as 10GBASE-SR of the IEEE 802.3ae.

Digital diagnostics functions of this X2 10gb transceivers are available via a 2-wire serial interface. Cisco X2 10GB SR transceiver is a multimode products used for 10G networks, it works with 850nm via multimode fiber. The Cisco X2 10GB SR Cisco module is a multimode transceiver target at the 10G applications. It works with 850nm multimode fiber and the optical interface is duplex SC. X2 10GB SR can link the equipment to fiber optic networks, max transmission distance is 300meters.
