As the improvement of fiber optic technologies, 10G Ethernet products are coming to fit the increasing demand for bandwidth. SFP plus is the 10G fiber optic transceiver which used for 10G Ethernet and other high speed transmissions. SFP+ is with much higher data rate and latest industrial standards. SFP+ is more compact size compared with the former 10G transceivers X2 and Xenpak, it has greater ability for density installations.

Several standards for SFP+ has been released for 10Gpbs networks, including 10GBase-SR, 10GBase-LR and 10GBase-LRM. 10GBase-SR is for OM3 multimode optical fiber, relevant SFP plus working distance 300 meters max. 10GBase-LR is for single mode optical fiber, relevant SFP plus working distance 10km. 10GBase-LRM is for FDDI multimode fiber, the SFP plus working distance 220 meters.

Cisco SFP 10G SRis a hot fiber SFP+ transceiver module for multimode fiber links, it is 10GBase SR compliant and work at 850nm used for 10Gigabit applications, this transceiver is in standards SFP+ package to plug into the ports or slots on Cisco equipment, optical interface is duplex LC connector. It is complete compatible with IEEE 802.3ae 10Gbase-SR. Electrical interface of the SFP+ SR is compliant to SFF-8431. SFP 10G SR features low power consumption and it supports multi-rate from 2G fiber channel to 10G Ethernet, its max working distance is 300 meters over multimode optical fiber. When use 2000MHz*km MMF (OM3), 10Gbase-SR up to 300m link lengths are possible. When use 4700MHz*km MMF (OM4), up to 400m link lengths are possible.

Cisco Transceiver Modules support Ethernet, Sonet/SDH and Fibre Channel applications across all Cisco switching and routing platforms.Cisco GBIC transceivercan be interchanged on a wide variety of Cisco products and can be intermixed in combinations of 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, 1000BASE-ZX, or 1000BASE-CWDM interfaces on a port-by-port basis.

SFP+ is the upgrade virsion of SFP transceiver that used for 10G Ethernet network. Practically Cisco device can only work with Cisco compatible transceivers like Cisco SFP+ orCisco SFP transceiver, which supports the Cisco Quality Identification (ID) features and allows a Cisco switch or router to identify and validate the transceiver module that is certified and tested by Cisco.
